This collection includes information about Hofstadter's scholarly and political development following his graduation from the University of Buffalo in 1936. Items include images and documents from his years as a graduate student at Columbia University and as a young professor and historian living first in New York City and then in Maryland. This collection will be of particular relevance to those who are interested in Hofstadter's early writings, including <em>The American Political Tradition</em>, as well as those who are interested in his relationship to the Communist Party in the late 1930s.
