Included below are (1) "Politics and Classes," a review of The American Political Tradition in The New International, a Trotskyist newspaper; (2) reviews of the same book from The Washington Star and The Columbus Dispatch, Sept. 26, 1948; (3) "Some Idols Are Upset in a Study of Political Ideas," a review from The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette; (4) a two-page review from the Communist Party organ, The Daily Worker; (5) a two-page review written by the celebrated literary historian Perry Miller, from The Nation; (6) a favorable review written by the historian C. Vann Woodward, who would become a close friend of Hofstadter's in the 1950s and 1960s; and (7) a two-page letter of praise from Hofstadter's undergraduate mentor, the historian Julius W. Pratt.
